Automatic standby units - Modi

modeion.png OEZ belongs to leading suppliers of protection devices for low-voltage power supplies NN – so called power centres. Some pieces of the supplied equipment require owing to their importance continuous supply of electrical energy, or feeding from several power supplies. This concerns for instance power equipment, industrial buildings with continuous operation, or important infrastructure buildings.

That is why OEZ for a number of years has been delivering the solution that meets these requirements. This is a device which ensures reliable change over between the power supplies - the automatic standby unit Modi. In case of failure of one power supply the „MODI“ will ensure automatic safe change over to the other power supply. The other power supply can be a transformer or a standby generator.

New graphic touch display

This year the automatic standby unit Modi has been innovated; the innovation consisted in particular in the replacement of the control unit by a new, advanced one, and in the modifications performed on the basis of long experience in the production and commissioning of automatic standby units. The control unit has been completed by a graphic touch display with 4“ diagonal. The display displays not only the current status of the automatic standby unit and of the controlled circuit breakers; it is also used for the setting of the automatic standby unit modes and times for change over to the standby power supply and back. The display is interconnected with the control unit by an Ethernet cable, which length can be up to 100 m. Thanks to it the display can be installed e.g. in a control centre, control room, i.e. outside the panel with the control unit to enable easier supervision and control of the automatic standby unit.

Automatic standby unit Modi for BC160

Another noteworthy change is the possibility of using the innovated automatic standby unit Modi even with the smallest moulded case circuit breakers Modeion BC160, which means the coverage of the entire protection range from 12.5 A to 6300 A.

The main task of the automatic standby unit Modi is to monitor the network and to evaluate its condition. In case of network failure the automatic standby unit will react, and if the set conditions are fulfilled, it as soon as possible will send an impulse for disconnection of the main power supply and connection of the standby power supply. The failure state means undervoltage, overvoltage or full power failure in one of the phases. The automatic standby unit will change over to the main power supply after recovery of the operating status on the main power supply. The time of the change over from the main power supply to the standby power supply can be already from 0.8 s. The upper limit is given by the setting of the automatic standby unit, which is performed by the user. Among other things, the automatic standby unit also ensures safety of operation. It disables simultaneous switching on the both power supplies, and will not switch on the standby power supply, if the load circuit was switched off by failure i.e. by short circuit or over-current.

Automatic standby unit Modi - two basic variants

The automatic standby unit Modi is delivered in two basic variants - for control of two power supplies or for control of two power supplies with longitudinal coupling. Both types are also off ered in two versions of mechanical arrangement. The first version is in the IP65 sheet-steel Distri switchboard, and the second version can be built in the switchboard door.

The automatic standby unit can be supplier:

  • from active power supply with possibility of standby supply of 24 V d.c.,
  • from external supply of 24 V d.c.,
  • from external supply of 110 to 230 V a.c/d.c.

Functions of the automatic standby unit for the control of two power supplies:

  1. automatic operation – automatic standby
  2. manual operation – only with power supply 1
  3. manual operation – only with power supply 2
  4. manual operation – both power supplies disconnected

For automatic operation it is possible to select one of three modes:

  1. Equivalent power supplies
    The load can be supplied permanently from any power supply. In case of loss of voltage of the active power supply, the power supply is disconnected from the load, and the load is connected to the other power supply. After voltage renewal of the first power supply, the load will remain connected to the other power supply, because the power supplies are equivalent.
  2. Priority of power supply 1
    The load is supplied permanently from the power supply 1 (priority supply). In case of loss of voltage of the power supply 1, the power supply is disconnected, and the power supply 2 is connected. After voltage renewal of the power supply 1, the change over takes places, and the load is again supplied permanently from power supply 1.
  3. Priority of power supply 2
    The mode is analogous to the previous one, however with the opposite priority of power supplies.

Functions of the automatic standby unit for the control of two power supplies with longitudinal coupling:

  1. automatic operation – automatic standby
  2. manual operation – both power supplies disconnected
  3. manual operation – only with power supply 1
  4. manual operation – only with power supply 2
  5. manual operation only with power supply 1 with closed longitudinal coupling
  6. manual operation only with power supply 2 with closed longitudinal coupling
  7. manual operation with both power supplies

For automatic operation it is possible to select one of three modes:

  • Equivalent power supplies
    Both loads can be permanently supplied from any power supply. In case of loss of voltage of one power supply, the power supply is disconnected from the load, and the load is connected (the longitudinal coupling closes) to the other power supply. After voltage renewal of the first (original) power supply, the change over will not take place. The change over is only performed after the loss of voltage of the other power supply.
  • Standby for power supply 1
    Load 1 can be supplied from power supply 1 or power supply 2. Load 2 can be supplied only from power supply 2. In case of loss of voltage of power supply 2 change over will not take place. Load 2 will remain without power supply. The change over will only take place in case of loss of voltage of power supply 1.
  • Standby for power supply 2
    The mode is analogous to the previous one, however the standby is eff ected only for the power supply 2.
    Both the Modeion or Arion WL circuit breakers and switch-disconnectors controlled by the automatic standby unit shall always be equipped with accessories, which are specified in the catalogue for the automatic standby unit.
