Modeion BC160 – The newest family member completes the series

This popular saying certainly applies to the development of our BC160 circuit breakers, which represent the crowning achievement in the genesis of Modeion moulded case circuit breakers. In the beginning, it was our idea to create a product series that would continue the manufacturing tradition of the former Czechoslovakia associated with the J2UX circuit breakers, which were probably the most widespread circuit breakers in their day, and to replace the already outdated series of AR air circuit breakers. Not only would this require technical innovations, but it also would represent a generational leap that would put a new face on a firm whose tradition of producing electrical devices extends back to the first half of the last century.

But that is history. Let us return to the present. Let us take a look at several essential parameters to serve as an introduction to the useful properties of the devices that we will present to you.

By its dimensions (75 mm wide, 70 mm deep, 130 mm high) and rated current of 160 A, the Modeion BC160 stands among the smallest devices of its kind in the world. At the same time, a current of 160 A and voltage of 230 V means a capacity of 110 kW, which is enough for larger commercial premises or large residential buildings. This will protect a transformer of such energy output without problem, because the short-circuit current that this circuit breaker is able to disconnect is 25 kA at rated voltage 400 V. This short-circuit current makes its use possible also as protection for outgoing branch feeders in industrial distributions. And this is not just in 400V/230V distribution networks, as it also can be used in 690V/400V systems, because its maximum operational voltage is 690 V.

The BC160 circuit breaker was developed in several designs. The design with characteristic L is intended for protecting circuits of lines, because the circuit breaker has a short-circuit release setting at four times the rated current. This design is notable for its simplicity of use, as it has no adjustment elements. Our slogan for this design is: “Unwrap, connect and switch on”.

The circuit breaker with characteristic designation D is intended especially for industrial applications, because it permits adjustment not only of the rated current but also of the short-circuit release. It is exactly this that makes it possible with this type of characteristic to protect both wiring and such devices with high starting currents as groups of lights or motor feeders.

For direct protection of motors up to 100 A, there is the design with characteristic M. A control dial in the space for the overcurrent release makes it possible to regulate the rated current, and the short-circuit release is set at ten times the rated current.

Another possibility that the BC160 offers is a circuit breaker with only a short-circuit release and that has the characteristic designation N. This finds its place, for instance, in protecting welding transformers. Finally, we must not forget either about the type V switch-disconnectors.

The customer will find the characteristics and designs in the type designations for these circuit breakers. The circuit breaker designation system was designed so that it would be easy to recognise whether it is a three-pole or four-pole circuit breaker and what is the characteristic of the overcurrent release with which it is equipped. Everything can be seen clearly in the following example: BC160NT305-80-M. This is a three-pole circuit breaker with rated current 80 A and characteristic M for the protection of motors.

Everyone involved in the area of elements for low-voltage protection will have noted some interesting trends. One of these has been the effort to achieve the smallest possible dimensions. Of course, this brings with it some drawbacks, such as difficulty in connection. But it is exactly in the connecting that our designers have created one of the BC160 circuit breaker’s main advantages. The circuit breaker makes it possible to connect not only copper conductors, but by installing connecting terminals it also becomes possible to connect aluminium conductors with diameters up to 95 mm2. Moreover, double block terminals can provided for the connection of even two conductors with diameters up to 120 mm2.

It is impossible in one short article to list everything offered by the BC160 circuit breaker. Nevertheless, we should remind ourselves of the oft-mentioned modularity. The customer can equip the circuit breaker with auxiliary switches, signal switches, auxiliary releases and drives. The circuit breaker signals its status with a simple “click”, it can be disconnected remotely, and, because we are preparing the motor drive for remote controlling, it also can be connected in that way.
